You'll need to purchase a charger - one with about a 50 amp "Start" setting - to supply most of the current to run the pump. The battery is needed to supply any excess, such as the starting current of the pump motor and to provide the regulation and filtering of the charger's output. Fortunately, you need to buy a battery anyway so neither of these items are a waste. I purchased an automotive charger that, besides the "Start" and normal 10 amp settings, also has an automatic trickle charge setting (max. output of about 1 amp) that I keep connected in the winter when very little flying is done here in the Northwest. Whenever I need to cycle my gear on the ground, I hook the charger to the battery and let it do the work. One of the worst things you can do to a battery is to let it run down and then let it sit for a while. That'll destroy even the best batteries through a process known as Sulfation (or is it Sulphation?). Regardless, you need to keep it charged or it'll go away pretty quickly.
