Thanks for the responses.  I gather that standard airplane insurance covers life insurance for the named pilots (didn't know that -- maybe I oughta read my Cessna 150 policy), that some extra charge is required for first flights of experimental airplanes (well, duh), and that Avemco is willing to handle this.  So it's a solvable problem.
