You should also consider that if the nut loosened and the control rod
turned the effective length of the rod would not alter as it would screw
out
and lengthen at one end and the opposite at the other. Both check nuts
would have to loosen for this to occur. Mind you if this happened and the
rod could become completely detached at one end then that is another
matter.
This happened to a friend of mine about 2 years ago on a RV4. He had
forgotten to retighten the check nuts on the elevator push rod after an
annual. About 20 hours later, no pitch control. He landed in a plowed
field, almost totaled the airplane but he and his passenger walked away.
