The proper way to install the jam nuts is to do just that - they are tightened securely against the end of the rod-end. Some insurance can be attained by using Lok-tite (use the removeable type - you may need to replace a rod-end some day) though I didn't find this to be necessary. Be sure to torque-mark the nut in an area you can see for inspection purposes. I took this technique from an old timer in the airplane fixing and rebuilding game and I have never had a jam-nut loosen.
