Anybody want an IO-360-B1E?
Everybody should have my problems.
I currently own a solid IO-360-B1E with 13.1 hours on it. It was majored by
Penn-Yan in 1985, flown on a Glasair for 13.1 hours. The guy crashed the
airplane, started to rebuild it but never finished. He did get the engine
re-built, crank magnafluxed, etc, but parted it out in 1994 or so. The guy
who bought it did another re-build and sold it to me in 1996. I have kept
it pickled and in the nice dry desert ever since.
I planned to send it out to LyCon who does more than a little custom work,
including some racing stuff and let them flow balance it, maybe add some
10:1 pistons (argh arGH ARGH!), while having it check out yet again prior my
flying it in a year or two.
Then, Van's gets this OEM deal with Lycoming for Glasairs (not kidding,
check the website yourself). $29,300 for a factory new IO-360-B1E! Wife
says: "How about it for Christmas?" (not kidding again!)
She would prefer the new engine. I like the idea of the hot rod version
myself, but not too smart to do that to a new engine IMO.
Anybody want my "old" one? The going rate looks like about $18K, but
frankly, I don't have that much in it. It has an alternator, starter, and
one impulse coupled Slick Magneto. Any crazies out there who think I should
just stay away from new and keep my current one? I am confident it is a
solid engine, but who can turn down the idea of NEW? Still, Ron Cox has
10:1's, gotta be faster than him... whooda thunk I would question the idea
of a _new_ engine? Whooda thunk I would get the chance!
