Kit # 2 reporting in: I did mine the week ending with the Labor day flyin and during Lancair's preparation for Reno. It was a busy week, however, my objectives were met. After observing the state of the kit at Oshkosh, I was convinced that it would take me longer to build the wing and stabilizer/elevator jigs than just going to Redmond and closing them there. The quality of the moldings and work done by Lancair is excellent. Remember that the wings and belly are laid up as one part, placed in a jig and the spars and ribs are installed on top. Access doors are built, hard points built, hardware installed, antenna installed and the fuel sealer applied. In order to ship these parts, the wing skin is then cut from the belly pan and the spars are unbolted. Major parts fit together because they were built together. Beautiful! I had chosen the speed brake option, so much of the time was spent installing the pockets in the "wet" area of the wing. After that, it took about 1.5 days to close the wings and a similar (but overlapped) time to close the horizontal stabilizer and elevator. Time was spent making and fitting the elevator counterweights which should not have to be done in future sessions. Of course, I learned some new tricks from Lancair's experienced staff, including using a flat sheet of 3 or 4 bid to mount 28 nutplates (for the speed brakes) with oversized bolt-holes. These were cut out in rectangles, bolts were waxed and each nutplate assembly was floxed in place and held by the waxed bolt -- very fast, requires less precision and looks neater from the outside. The trip was worthwhile -- go if you can. Don't Know. "It" will be dropped off on Tuesday, 17 October by Tom Murray as he is also transporting his Kit #5 to Michigan. While waiting, I sold the Skymaster and am converting that part of the hangar to a workshop.
