Why? Because my normal sequence of preflight activities had been interrupted. For some unknown reason, I walked back to close the hangar door without first removing and stowing the tow bar as is my habit. Although I'm also a habitual checklist reader, that didn't save me. It was just dumb luck that I flashed on the tow bar as I reached for the ignition. While I know that distraction is the bane of every pilot, there's a new first step in my printed pre-start checklist : "Tow Bar........Stowed."
