I think this comment of Theo Green's referred to insuring the finished airplane, but I imagine insurance on the kit parts is required if you finance the kit. (Don't know for sure, since I borrowed money from my folks, and yes, I've paid them back.)
I have my kit insured through Avemco while under construction. It is really little more than additional homeowners insurance, since the only feasible loss mechanism is if your house is destroyed (primarily fire, though storms are a possibility, plus I live within 2 miles of the San Andreas fault...). The cost is 1% of what you declare the value to be. $30K for a kit means $300 per year for insurance. When my $25K engine arrives next month I'll want to up the declared value to about $60K, so insurance will jump to $600 per year.
BTW, if you have a construction loan with Avemco, and use the EAA tech counselor inspection program, they will insure you for the first ten flight hours (at an additional cost, of course).
And yes, I know Avemco has some horror stories about refusing to pay due to not updating modification paperwork with the FAA. That one really pissed me off.
