Bill,

The IV/IV-P series use a completely different system, so issues are not the same.

BUT…relay failures and other issues can cause serious problems. Worth discussing.
Did you get the building manuals with your airplane? These would be a great help in understanding how the system works, and what to do when it doesn’t. Note that I said when, not if… You will some day need to deal with hardware failures. You should already know how to do an emergency gear extension, and you should test this yourself, in flight. Call me if you have not already done this.

I've been following this discussion with great interest, as the new owner of a L IV (N84PL/serial #84).

Does the IV use the same system and is it thus subject to the same failure?

Thanks for the detailed history. You’re the second person to mention putting diode suppression across the motor terminals. I’ve been following the LML and LNN since 2000 but must have missed that somehow. There have also been several good suggestions for better or different relays. Since this is an existing installation, my plan is to add the bridge rectifier mentioned in the attached article. That should accomplish the same goal of extending relay life and preventing future failures.

I’ll take a closer look at the relays when I go back to Ohio to retrieve my plane.

I'm surprised to learn of this failure and feel badly because I'm the guy who recommended the Bosch relays back in the nineties.
Do you intend to take the relay apart to verify that the contacts are, in fact, welded? Bosch might be interested as well, but I certainly wouldn't mention that you're using their relays in an airplane.
