My opinion is that there probably isn't a good fix for this. I try to shadow the iPad when the sunlight overpowers it.  I suspect that any screen would yield similar results because, unlike the instruments in the panel a tablet is not under the glare shield and protected from the sunlight.

Hello all,

There has been a lot of talk about the mini iPad and I’m in the market for one to replace my iPad2 in the cockpit.  My dilemma is this:  I don’t need 4G for connectivity as my iPhone5 can act as hotspot when I’m out of other WIFI range.  Therefore the remaining question for me in deciding whether I need 4G or just WIFI is that I’m not sure the WIFI mini iPad has GPS and whether it can map my position on the charts in Foreflight or other electronic flight programs.  Asking on the Apple blogs makes things somewhat more confusing so I thought I’d ask the group if anyone has tried a WIFI only iPad or Mini in flight and if so could you get georeferencing on your charts and plates?  Overall opinions about relative merits of one over the other?

Thanks,
John
