Jay,
Our stock IO550-N fuel system had been “set up” by two different A&P mechanics. The takeoff fuel flow was (and is) 30 gph at near sea level per Advanced Pilot Course for detonation margin, no problem there.
However, the idle was never right. The engine would try to die on rollout at full rich unless we goosed the throttle with RPM below 900. After the Greenville Lancair/LOBO Landing this year, at Neal’s suggestion, I called Continental’s Fairhope maintenance shop and they worked me in on very short notice. They saved me a trip back from Texas. Apparently the set up requires Continental’s special Fuel Set Up Instrumentation and knowledgeable mechanics. Roger Grable the Facility Manager, a mechanic and yours truly in the cockpit took about an hour to get it just right.
I may be missing something, but adequate fuel flow for takeoff (allowing for your engine mods) and the correct idle set up should do the trick.
