I'm guessing since he said he was at flight level 230 that he was probably on an IFR flight plan of some sort. Simple answer is FlightAware is definitely not perfect. Track some of my days at work before. Every now and then it looks like I took a Star Trek transporter with the airplane from point a to point C.

Were you IFR or VFR flight following? I've noticed that FlightAware tracking
when VFR flight following is spotty at best. I spoke to a FlightAware rep at
Sun 'n Fun a couple of years ago. He said that they just pull data from the
FAA, and that VFR flight following doesn't always show up on the system.

Subject: [LML] flightaware - question

Dear subscribers,

On 11/9/2013 I flew from 5G7 (Ohio) to MYR (South Carolina) and back on the
same day. I had a great tailwind at FL230 going south and I recall seeing
ground speeds up to 315 kts at one point.

When I try to look up the flight on flightaware I just see the slow flight
coming back - the fast flight going south is missing.

I recall that this happened at least two more times so far: The flight going
somewhere with a strong tailwind and ground speeds >300kts is missing and
the flight back on the same day is there.

Is this just a coincident or has someone else experienced something similar?

Ralf
