There was a mention today of someone putting a Molex connector on their OAT
probe. Keep in mind that most OAT probes are thermocouples, which generate
tiny voltages at almost no current. Using ordinary types of connectors on
the thermocouple wire adds additional thermocouples, which are, after all,
simply connections of two dissimilar metals. Any connectors used should be
special thermocouple connectors, made for the same type thermocouple as the
OAT probe (i.e., chromel, alumel, type K, or whatever), and the extension
wire should also be the same type thermocouple wire. Polarity is marked on
the connectors and must be followed. The OAT meter will always give some
sort of indication, but unless you are careful with the TC wiring, you won't
have any idea what your real OAT is.
The simples thing is to figure out your mounting location before ordering,
then specify the wiring length when you buy your OAT instrument. [More
connectors = more problems!]
