I know nuts from soup about the vagaries of this particular engine but I do
know about buying unknown half life Lycoming engines. My experience
qualifies me to give the following advice. My advice is that unless you know
this engine from the time it was running, can see all the logs and talk to
the man who looked after it you should walk away. Maybe after all that you
should still walk away.
If you do buy it, the very least you should would, do before flying behind
it, is to have it is to have all the cylinders removed. Then you can check
some of the internals and all of the removed parts.
If there are problems you could end up with a total acquisition and overhaul
cost approaching a new 360 from Lancair. You would then still have an
engine with designed in problems if I read correctly.
I would never risk my precious backside and my high investment in money and
time by going cheap on the engine. THere is a song called the "Sounds of
Silence" You do not want to hear it.
You can buy ex Mooney engines for $7500 and have them rebuilt by a reputable
company. At least they have logs and do not come with design defects. You
will still have almost the cost of a new engine. Also do not forget that
you will in all probability have to modify the cowling to make it fit around
the engine. I am faced with this and I believe that it is not an enjoyable
task, although it feels good when you finish!
Bite the bullet and do it the safer way. There is no cheap way unless you
get lucky and the need for luck should not be part of an aviator's decision
making process.
