When I was building my kit (in the '86 -'92 time-frame) Lancair specifically advised against using acetone for bonding and surface prep and insisted that we use a product called "Klix 88". the rationale given at the time was that acetone would dissolve the oils and waxes that might be embedded in the surface but that it evaporated so quickly it just spread the contaminants around and redeposited them before you could wipe them all off. From experience, I can tell you that the Klix 88 cleaned the surface very well and was very slow to evaporate, allowing plenty of time to sop things up with clean paper towels. The stuff took some time to completely dry (10 -15 minutes maybe) but I never had a bonding or a paint adhesion problem. Don't know why the factory changed their tune on this and I have no data regarding it's relative toxicity (to MC or acetone) but I maintained good ventilation in the shop and used gloves when using it (as anyone should whatever they use). If I remember, the Klix was purchased at the local professional's paint supply outlet. Used about two or three for a 235, cleaning bonding surfaces and final prepping for paint (it's advertised function).
