I like the engine.  It has no accessory case to mess with, just two case
halves.  For that reason it uses the Bendix "double-barrel" mag, the 3000
series.  I rebuilt five H2AD's between 1995-1997 and learned quite a lot
about them.  I've done tear downs on three more and several tops.
The case seems to me to be the weekest point.  It can crack.  I've seen that
twice, one in service and one found at overhaul.  The thru bolts and studs
must be set correctly (if the case is line bored) to keep it all together.
At our flight school we were getting 3000 hrs from them regularly which is
pretty darn good.  Exhaust valves can be a problem, too, but that can happen
in any engine.  There is an oil system STC for the case which one owner had
done.  It sprays oil under the piston.
I recommend you read the engine log very carefuly before purchase.  What is
a Timex?  Keeps on ticking beyond TBO?  They will do that.  See if it has
any oil leaks.  That is a biggie.  If the backbone (spine) leaks you will
face a teardown.  If it leaks between the cylinders you have a cracked case.
If it is dry, makes oil pressure and compression without any valve
leakage... buy it.  Overhaul the mag and go.
