I believe that the swarms of show airplanes (aircraft that qualify to be judged, even if they are not) set OSH apart from other trade shows and air shows. Imagine if this element were removed, OSH would loose it's distinction. How do you attract show planes? Do show plane pilots come for the food, weather, a glass mug, a jacket patch, the chance to have their airplanes scratched and pawed by careless attendees? Duh! They come to meet others of like interest and to be part of the event. Therefore, if you increase the unique experience of Oshkosh from the showplane pilots (SP) perspective, you will improve Oshkosh overall. Give the SP more reasons to attend. Pope Paul and Tom must remember that the showplane pilot is the cornerstone of their empire and they need to publicly recognize that fact. Paul may be the founder but he is not the creator. His position undoubtedly attracts legions of sycophants. A wise man will hear the truth when spoken. Specific recommendations include: Close the flightline to non pilots / non EAA members Give the SP discounts on admission and food GIve awards/ recognition for multi year attendance Hospitality tents NEAR the flightline for SPs with snack food, beverages and toilets. On field rental cars and parking for SPs Also remember that gate take is a highly non linear function of a myriad of factors. If an accountant is advising anyone on how to improve gate take, they are wrong. If you improve on what you do that is unique, they will come. Landing field of dreams? Ouch! ;) Regards Brent PS Best of luck on your appointment.
