I shall avoid writing “ditto” but my Chelton and my GNS480 antennae are in the same location and I have the same experience: an occasional slow boot but never a loss in flight. Great system.

To add to the data base: My early two screen Chelton (think Sierra Flight Systems with some upgrades) with early Pinpoint GPS and Garmin 430 both have antennas in the dorsal section of the vertical stabilizer on my Lancair IV. They are installed on a shelf that doubles as the bottom floor of the ventilation duct carrying air forward from NACA scoop in the tail to the cabin. Both have had rock solid reception under all conditions except when well inside my hangar. I guess the skylights are not large enough. :-(. One other exception: occasional Chelton "GPS failure" warning on start up which quickly clears itself after a few seconds. Southern Hemisphere Fred (Satellites work better down here. None of that nasty Chinese air pollution. Bring sun block.) |
