I saw this first on my phone and didn't have the patience to write a better=
 answer....but this is what I've learned.

When I was researching the problem a couple of years ago, I came across the=

The original starter for the IO-550 met TCM's spec when it comes to the tor=
que necessary to drive the starter motor backwards.  The Iskra doesn't and =
subsequently there have been many starter adapter failures (or at least fol=
ks appear to be blaming Iskra, I don't have any actual data).

I replaced the Iskra starter with the original starter that came with the I=
O-550 years ago.  I don't remember the manufacture of the starter (I'll go =
look at it later today for you).  It came from the Niagra guys or they reco=
mmended a shop, I don't remember.  Give them a call, I remember them being =
very helpful.

The Iskra starter made a terrible noise, this one doesn't and I can actuall=
y turn the output shaft of my new starter with my fingers.

Now, I bought this before Skytec had come out with a starter that is suppos=
ed to be friendly to the io-550 adapter, that may be the way to go.  My sta=
rter is a beast, it is very heavy, but at least I've reduce the chances of =
buying a new starter adapter in short order...(at least I hope).

I think I've just experienced the iskra failure, slippage recently during s=
tarts and now failure to turn over the io550 this morning.  Can someone poi=
nt me to the fix assuming I need a starter and possibly adapter too?
