People confuse probability with severity. This is like contraception. 1% of the population gets 100% pregnant. These things do fail and some of the failure modes are caused outside = the unit. For that set of failure modes if you lose one pfd you'll lose = both. IMO not having a "rotating mass" backup is irresponsible.
