Angier -
I would go with Scott's suggestion to use something other than tape. I used 3-M plastic tape on my 235 (instructions as of my early build date - '88 thru '93) and the adhesive works loose over time requiring replacement. Pulling it off to replace will pull even the best paint off the tape line - particularly after sitting in the sun for a while - quite disappointing, to say the least.
I note that Scott recommends using a wet finger to smooth the caulk. Another method (picked up from the Rutan works in Mojave) is to use an ice cube instead of a finger. However, I would do some practice runs of both methods to see which works best for you. Incidentally, the ice cube method also works really nice for creating a neat epoxy fillet in corners when doing a bulkhead join - also gleaned from the Rutan guys.
