"Should fly my plane fly in primer or should I paint it before?"
"A friend mentioned the plane should fly in primer first to fix problems easier. What kind of problems should I expect (especially since it flew before) ..."
If you use WLS and do not sand the final application, it forms an nice epoxy barrier. Oil and exhaust residue is easily washed off. I flew for 200 hours in primer. When ready for painting I wiped down the under side of the plane with acetone. -no paint issues 10 yrs/1,000 hours later. I'm sure there are many primers that will give you different/bad results.
One nice aspect of getting the plane outside for a bit while still in primer, is that it will help bake the primer and eliminate the post-painting shrinkage that shows the weave pattern of the glass.
