George writes: <<I like what you have done with your engine, but this
explanation for the
change in oil consumption just doesn't "sound right" to me.>>
And Jack asks: <<1. What effect did the "maintenance" race have on your oil
consumption?
2. Did you win?
3. If the oil consumption improved, did you get to give the
"neener-neener-neener" look to your wife on your return?>>
I confirmed the cylinder corrosion with and endoscopic inspection of the
cylinders. I bought this medical endoscope on ebay for $600. Nice instrument
if you can get past where its been :0 The corroded areas of the cylinder
walls looked a little pitted and had a crystalline appearance when viewed
from a distance. The pitted area was at the top, about an inch wide and
started about a quarter inch down from the choke. It was the fact that it
was not present in the choke that gave me the high BMEP idea. I attribute
the previously "unbelievably" low oil consumption to an air-oil separator in
the vent line (with a return to the sump) and de-aerating baffling I
designed into the sump. I understand that John Forker experienced a similar
problem that he remedied with a cylinder hone and fresh rings.
I haven't flown enough since then to determine conclusively if my "maintain"
worked. I should have enough data by the end of the month. Will advise.
I did win the IV class in the race (did I mention Lance came in third) but
was beaten by the turbine (duh) and Rick's little Legacy. Actually, to be
more accurate I should say beaten by Rick's engine, the one with the little
airplane glued to the accessory case ;) Big engine + little airplane = GO
FAST. I love it! All I need now is 200 more horsepower.........
The repercussions of giving the wife the "neener-neener-neener" look would
far outweigh the momentary satisfaction. Even by my math that account is
still overdrawn from the building process.
