Coroner's officials on Saturday said the pilot of the Lancair Legacy two-seat plane was LeRoy Poulin, 76, and the passenger was Francisco Javier Arteaga of Rancho Cucamonga. The two men died after the plane crashed nose-first into a field about 1 mile northwest of the airport at 11:50 a.m., according to investigators. The plane apparently left French Valley Airport earlier Friday and was returning to the airport when it crashed, Murrieta police Lt. Dennis Vrooman said Saturday. Federal Aviation Administration records showed the plane was registered to Poulin. Poulin's son, Marshall, said his father started working on the plane about two and a half years ago at the French Valley Airport and had just recently reached the required amount of flight time needed to move the plane. LeRoy Poulin was planning to fly the plane Saturday from French Valley to Compton, near his home in Carson, according to his son. He said Arteaga was a mechanic who had been working on the plane with Poulin. Arteaga's family could not be reached for comment Saturday. When Marshall Poulin heard about the crash, he said he called his father "hoping to God it was not him." He also called Arteaga because Arteaga had been along on Poulin's test flights. "I had a feeling it was probably him and Frank," Marshall Poulin said. "I just had that feeling." He said his father's fatal flight might have been another test flight. Though Poulin had a Colorado address, he lived mostly in Carson and stayed with a daughter in Escondido when he was working on his plane in French Valley, his son said. He co-owned a business in Carson, Interface Welding, that did work for aerospace companies, according to Marshall Poulin. The National Transportation Safety Board and FAA are investigating the incident, according to FAA spokesman Ian Gregor. On Friday, FAA Aviation Safety Investigator John Schaper said there did not appear to be any fuel on board the aircraft, though he could not rule out mechanical difficulties as the cause. Schaper said investigators planned to disassemble the engine. Marshall Poulin said his father was a "fantastic pilot" who used to fly with Marshall and his other children when they were younger. "He would take us up over the ocean and do aerobatics with us," he said. "He was a great pilot. He was always very cautious about fuel and was always very careful about maintenance on the plane." Patricia Poulin, Marshall's mother, agreed that her ex-husband was an "excellent pilot." She added, "There were some issues with the plane that they thought were corrected." LeRoy Poulin was a father of five whose death shocked his entire family, Patricia Poulin said. "We're just stunned as to what in the hell happened," she said.
