We bought ours in 2002 but I don't know if this is the newer or older version.  It is not installed yet.  In our documentation I find no reference to 'J1'.  Our unit has a D-sub 25 pin connector and shows:
 Pin 3 - AOA LCD data          DO   blue     MT2
 Pin 5 - AOA LCD back light  6V    black   MT6
