The goal was to get a show quality paint job and this was to be my first serious painting attempt. The hours spent getting the airplane parts ready to paint was about 1,000 hours. The actual time painting was about 100. The material cost including all the sanding papers, fillers that ended up on the floor, paint booth parts and etc. was about $1,900. I'm sure I could cut the time in half on my next attempt. I used the PPG base coat clear coat system and I am very happy with it. It is easy to repair and still has that wet look. Who ever the manufacturer, I would highly recommend urethane as the only paint that seems to holds up in rain. Urethanes retain some flexability. And yes, I ended up with a show quality paint job. The quality of the paint job is mostly in the body work and prep. A 10% improvement in the quality of the end job doubles the time required. What kind of a job will you be getting for the $6,500?
