In the seventies--thats almost 30 years ago--I invented a thermoelectric based heater-refridgerator that was used in the manufacture of semiconductor chips. One of our main customers was Western Electric--thats AT&T, T for all you stock market investors. Anyway, at a time when warranties for products was diminishing, we offered a real warranty--if it breaks, ship it back-we will fix it or replace it. Period. No mention of time limits. We would take a failed unit and find out what the problem was, and incorporate a better part in all our new production. We had the finest temp controller in the world. Digitally dial in a desired temp, and the unit would take a container of chemical to that temp and hold it there within 0.01 degree C. Forever. Well last week, (I sold the company 15 years ago) one of my old employees told me that AT&T called and asked about warranty on one of my units--it had run almost 30 years! I told him to replace it no charge.....hehehe. My point is, if Garmin is bringing the defective units back and learning from them, then Garmin will have GPS units that work for tens of years! It is the smart way of doing business--the old responsible American way that made this country great. It is a bright light in the wilderness. I am going to buy a Garmin unit for my next GPS.
