Apparently, the disruption in airflow brought exhaust gasses into the airframe at some point, for the rise in levels was immediate when I went full flaps. Interestingly, partial flaps on take off gave no readings at all. So, the bottom line is that I feel much better about the whole thing. And, seeing the rapid response of the AIM detector really gave me confidence--I wouldn't fly without one in the cockpit from now on.
