"Has anyone experienced a downward blast from a landing aircraft?"Boy have I
ever!

I took the attached photo on Diego Garcia during an Indian Ocean deployment
with the Navy back in 1981.  I was bored one day so I climbed up on the
approach light structure nearest the runway to take some shots of incoming
aircraft.  When this C-5 flew over me, the deafening engine noise was soon
replaced by the sound of gusting wind followed by a combination of downdraft
and wake turbulence that very nearly knocked me from the lights.  If my camera
hadn't been attached to a strap around my neck, it would have fallen to the
ground beneath me when I had to grab the structure with both hands to keep
from being blown off of it.  It was like being in a vertical hurricane for a
couple of seconds and then it just stopped.  Pretty powerful demonstration.
