I have a lot of time in Pitts S1T and S2B and have spun them in all possible configurations. I pass along my tip from my mentors and what I have learned to work for me.

For orientation and spin direction, always look between the cabine struts. It is easy to get disoriented by looking to the side and hard to tell if you've held rudder too long and gone from upright spinning to inverted spinning. Of course you must give full rudder opposite to the direction of the spin to stop the rotation.  Needless to say this is preceeded by full power reduction and neutralization of the elevator.

I would think one could determine in this way even in clouds but I have no experience in this.
