While I don't agree with the structural integrity of Lancair's fix, I'm
starting to appreciate it's appeal from their viewpoint...i.e. you don't
have to break out existing attach blocks, which would make a lot of owners
very unhappy, to say the least. In addition, the original attach blocks are
installed prior to the upper stub wing skin, when there was good access to
the gear well. With the stub wing skin on, it becomes handicap to work in
this very tight area and there's the question of how good a job a builder or
other repairman would do in a complete removal and replacement of this
critical part. If a complete replacement isn't reasonably well done, a
serious problem will have been created. This all argues strongly for the SB
leaving existing blocks in place and installing a brace, although I feel
certain that Lancair would install a single full-width block if they had it
to do over again.
I replaced my right-side attach block three years ago because the primary
(Hysol) bond failed. I didn't want to go in and replace both sides with my
recommended full-width block, so I simply replaced the right side same as
originally installed. Now, it shows signs of bond failure again. The left
side remains OK.
