In my experience (counted on one hand- once in brand new ((1 hr)) - and from what Iv'e been told--- Generally speaking--
Detonation erodes the center of the piston. Preignition erodes the edge as you have here.
So I agree with Paul.

Jeff! I'd have to say that came from pre-ignition, not from operating in the normal, Lycoming-recommended range, unless it was from an engine operated above their limits.
