We recently addressed this problem by mounting the mac 9 servo through the aileron spar, the body of the servo lies half way ahead of the spar and is secured by a bracket. It is still accessible through the same access panel. The horn for the tab is just slightly higher than the bottom of the skin, and the coupler to the crank as it arcs over the hinge line needed a lot of room carved out of the aileron skin. We will cover both with a little cosmetic cover. We sized ours to 1.5 by 7 inches, so the size recommended by Brent Reagan is now accepted as the correct one; I recall talking to Brent a long time ago and that may be how the size was finally determined. Brent's information has served me very well over the years. It seems that we also made some changes in the aileron ribs to accommodate the change in the placement of the servo in the spar to carry the loads to the skin. Yes, it can be done, I can put some of the pictures on the web site Rainbowaviation.com if anyone is interested. Final caveat: We are still building, not flying, so the tale of what we chose to do is untested.
