According to Bob Knuckles one should only use a RG (recombinant Gas)
sealed type battery in an airplane. In his chapter on batteries he has a
diagram of a unit to test the battery to decide when to replace it. Read
his chapter and you will be very happy with the battery you have.
The RG batteries have a lower internal resistance, therefore a higher
voltage for starting an engine. In addition they are cheaper than
aircraft batteries. I use two 17 amp 12 volt batteries in my IV, 24
volt, system. They are working very well.
