Another thing you can do is loosen and brake the seal, cover the filter with a baggie and then unscrew it by hand and capture the oil in the baggie.  Make sure the oil has cooled sufficiently so  that you burn your hands or melt the baggie.  This keeps all the oil inside the bag and not on your accessory case, wires, hoses and other stuff under the cowling.
