FWIW to all at the annual fly-in:

Got to thinking about the stated average race speed for my 235 at the Fly-in
yesterday of 217 MPH (188.7 Kts) and have got to believe that there must
have been an error made, either in the timing or in the calculation.

First, I made every turn (S39 Prineville, S33 Madras and 6K5 Sisters)
directly over the points where my GPS Time-to-go indicator hit zero. Of
course, I also looked down as I banked toward the next check-point and
verified that I was, indeed, over the right airport (I've seen them all
before as they've all been used as race turn-points several times in the
past) so I know didn't cut any short.

Second, my GPS ground speed read-out indicated that, except for the short
climb-out to 4800 MSL, I was running consistently between 169 and 171 Kts GS
around the entire course. I calculate that 170 Kts meant I was running 195.5
MPH for most of the time which should have yielded slightly less for the
average (due to the time to climb) for the race. This speed is more
consistent with my results in the past (this was about the 7th if 8th
Lancair race I've run over the years) which has always been in the 195 - 200
MPH range.

I would LIKE to believe that I outran all the other 235's, 320's and 360's
with my 235 like Tim said I did but it just doesn't compute. At the more
defendable 195 MPH for N235SP, the 360's of Chuck Werner (N749CC) and Roy
Bredfield (N35BZ) turned in faster times.

I did pass one 320 and went faster than two 360's and two 320's at 195 MPH,
so I'll take the win, regardless of the fact that I don't think I could
squeeze 217 MPH out of N235SP except during a descent.

Dan Schaefer.
