I used two criteria:
1. Could I get a wet compass on top of the glare shield
without fouling the canopy.
2. Could I get my knees under the panel. Could my
passenger get his knees under the panel. The right hand side of my panel
is lower than the left and has a recessed portion which is tailr made for
switches. However you have to be careful to get it high enough for knee
clearance.
I would say that the higher you can get it the better.
If I was doing it again I would not put anything on the glare shild and would
keep the panel as high as I could without spoiling my view of the
instruments.
I used the panel from Lancair as the the attachment to the
plane and fabricated left and right aluminum panels to carry the
instruments and circuit breakers. These panels are secured around the periphery
of the fibreglass panels by machine screws. The majority of the fibreglass
panel is cut away and the periphery is the only portion that is load
bearing. It carries the attachmnt points to the rest of the plane and also
carries the Al. sub panels, which as as well as carrying the instruments act to
stiffen the periphery of the fibre glass panel.
