 Perhaps someone has mentioned this already, but a very eye opening NASA study
on icing, particularly tailplane (horizontal stabilizer) is available from
Sportys as well as
 http://icebox-esn.grc.nasa.gov/ext/education/video/video.html  and gives some
advice on handling ice - dealing with auto-pilot, and tail stalls, which may
be what you were close to.  Definatly a don't try this at home video.
