Colyn,
No, I have the "original" Sierra Flight Systems EFIS. After Chelton acquired
SFS, they spent a great deal of time and money to get it certified. Of
course, this caused a significant price increase. This put it outside the
reach of all but the most expensive experimental airplanes.
Not resting on their laurels, not only has Chelton continued to add feature
after feature and make the system accept almost any kind of input that a
pilot might dream of having, they now have a version of their product called
the "Sport". I don't know the exact name, but Sport is a short-hand way of
referring to it. It's at a very competitive price-performance point and
looks identical to what I have. Due to all the intervening upgrades, it
actually has more features than my original system had (although I have all
the latest stuff), and it costs much less than what I paid! It's a heck of a
deal.
So while my "original" system is not exactly what is out there today, I
believe the software and pretty much all of the functionality (with a couple
of exceptions) is what is available now at a very attractive price. See
www.direct2avionics.com for more info. Or call Kirk Hammersmith at
916.802.4360 (cell) or 541.504.8300 (main office) for the latest scoop.
Hopefully, Rob Logan will chime in and tell you about some of the new
goodies in the latest software release.
By the way, I have no financial arrangement of any kind with either Chelton
or Direct 2 Avionics.
