Chat,
If you want epoxy primer, I don't think you can beat the price of the WLS
from Lancair. It's expensive to ship though. I bought 3 gallons and
hauled them back with my kit in the truck. I used all 3 gallons on the
tops of my wings!
There are several high quality primer-surfacers available from PPG. I
think the best one is DPHS52, which is an epoxy primer at about $160/1.5
gallons. You buy a gallon of primer and a half gallon of catalyst, for 1.5
gallons of sprayable. It definitely won't shrink. It takes a few
hours to dry.
Some of the OMNI products from PPG are easy to use and about half the
price, but they aren't epoxy. The local rep said that shrinkage isn't an
issue if you don't use any reducer. I have had good results with the
MP282. It will spray through a gun without any reducer and it dries
in less than an hour.
I did 98% of my bodywork a year ago with mostly the MP282. It's had a
year to shrink! I'm getting ready to do the final prep for paint and I'm
going to use DPHS52 since it will only be on the airplane a week or two before
the paint goes on.
I would talk to your painter and see what he recommends. He can
probably buy the primer for you and get his discount. That's what I did
and saved about 15%.
