I hope I wasn't misleading.  You never use any sealant on flared fittings.  What I did was order some of the soft aluminum inserts for some of my flared fittings.  I didn't use any inserts on hose to AN joints for example (all commercially manufactured flares), but I used the inserts on my aluminum flared fittings (made by an amateur, me).

 

I used the Teflon sealant on all pipe threads, keeping it off the first one or two threads.
