After playing around with mixture (messing it up = really) I did what Mike Dehate originally advised which was to shield = the mechanical fuel pump. Just a piece of aluminum sheet clamped to the = engine mount in such a way as to block radiated heat from the exhaust to = the pump. Never had a problem since. I reset the idle mixture to the = normal place (causing 50 rpm rise on cutoff) and life was good.
