Kirk,
I was the other customer Hal referred to regarding the erroneous stormscope
info on Chelton. WIlliam inputted the test strikes and it displayed correctly
on the Garmin 430 and incorrectly (180 degrees out) on the Chelton. I am
running 5.0. There was no overrirde of mag heading or anything like that as I
was
the person doing the manipulation of the knobs on the Garmin. Be that as it
may,
no matter what the problem is-- hardware-- software or whatever, the Chelton
is displaying stormscope strikes incorrectly and I concur with Hal, in that
we
need to be very careful relying on stormscope/ Chelton information until this
problem (on more than one aircraft) is researched and resolved. I appreciate
William's and L3's hard work this weekend at the Lancair flyin trying to
resolve Stormscope issues and your looking into this matter further.
BTW, I do suspect 5.0 at this time as I have had an opportunity to observe
lightning strikes and not see anything on the Chelton at the expected range
and
bearing... just my 2 cents.
Regards,
Jeff Edwards
[ first, I've not hear of any issues... (other than skin map
pains) if the wx500 gets heading from a gps, and you are
on the ground the heading will be 0 or gosh knows
what if the GPS is chasing selective availability ... the
correct way to wire the wx500 is to the EFIS as it has a
real heading, not gps track... (plus it makes the strikes
really zip around when you are on the ground about to
make a stupid flight) heck, if its ok on the 530 and bad
on the CFS, you KNOW its a heading input problem...
anyway, go into CFS maint mode and bring up the test wx500
page, and it has a cell quadrant test.. that will
tell you for sure if its working.. as for the heading
from gps or efis, well, look at the jumpers and wires
going into the wx500.. email me if you want the wiring docs..
I can't imagine an issue, but this seems to be a hot
one, so I'll just sit back -Rob ]
