"Well, there I was at 4500 ft one day, and I formed up with my
buddy in our Piper Warriors. Man, it sure was smoggy that day! Could barely see!
Anyway, the radio transmissions were coming hot and heavy... Lead gave me the
super secret signal to fall into trail-combat spread and watch out for bogies.
Man, that day was a tough one!"
Don't you just love sarcasm? The point of my little story is
to draw attention to some of the outrageous posts I have seen concerning
formation flying and training. Some thoughtful person came up with a really good
idea to put together a program providing training, education and knowledge to
Lancair pilots that would like to enjoy the fun and discipline that formation
flying requires.
What do we get? A good level of enthusiasm from guys that want
to participate, and some ego filled remarks about how great some of you other
guys are, or how we should not do it. Wow. Now, don't get me wrong - you guys
that flew combat in less that desireable conditions have my respect and thanks
for serving our country. No doubt. But that doesn't mean the rest of us are
idiots incapable of safely participating in a formation training program to
enjoy that type of flying.
You don't have to particiapte, and you don't have to fly next
to us. That's fine. But it gets a bit tiring hearing how us civies can't or
shouldn't fly formation. Some of us have some excellent skills and abilitites.
I, for one, would like to raise my experience level and hone the formation
skills that I have. Am I Chuck Yeager? Nope. But I am capable and I desire to
expand my experience and abilities.
Personally, I'd like to meet you all and learn from everybody
else's experiences. Egos or not, we can all participate in a training and
educational program and benefit.
Flame protection on.
