Dan,

I experienced the same exact thing in a similar condition while flying a Lancair ES to Golden State airshow about 1.5 yrs ago.  I was VFR, diverting around a huge cell and the temp was fairly warm.  Static built up then discharged, which was clearly heard in the headsets.  It took out the Trutrak a/p, Ray Allen trim indicator (servos continued to work), the Avidyne Entegra PFD and the JPI EDM-900.  I was VFR/VMC, had conventional back up gauges and the JPI appeared to be working after being reset, so I continued the flight and landed in Marysville, CA.  The Entegra didn't start working again until after I landed and had a bunch of colored lines running vertically through the display, the EDM-900 appeared to be working correctly but it had problems, so it was replaced.  The trim indicator LED's were shot and needed to be replaced.  The a/p was removed, sent back to Trutrak and returned to service.

Hamid makes excellent remarks.  Another point is you don't need to be in IMC for this to happen.  Additionally, it's inviting to spend $2K for an electronic "backup" Defis to replace your airspeed, ai, and altimeter.  Had it not been for the $200 UMA airspeed indicator, I would have been "guessing" my airspeed when landing.

Even though I have a Chelton system in my new ES panel which has gone through and passed the rigorous DO-160D testing, I still have a 2" airspeed indicator, ai, and altimeter.

Thanks for sharing your experience!  Wish you could be here at the fly-in but there's always next year.
