I've gotten the connectors wet on the end of my EI probes on two occasions when washing my ES.  On both occasions, my fuel indicator went stupid until I dried off the connectors.

 

Sounds like this is common to both EI and VM probes.  Might be worth putting a little clear caulk over the connectors to prevent this from happening.
