There is another option for producing highly accurate 3D models using
software, computer and a good camera . There are several products out
there. We use one called Photomodeler. It's based on phogrammetry -
essentially numerous stereo pair photographs to create measured 3D
models. It's used for architectural restoration, crime screens, plant
engineering, etc. The same points are identified on various photographs
and the computer relates that to a point in 3D space. Surface maps can
also be extracted. The software is under $1,000.00 and it's relatively
easy to use.
