The comment I read earlier about roads not making a good place to land
because of obstacles may be true in SOME cases.  However, unless it's a
two lane road with power lines going *across* it, I like my chances of
being able to land on even a two lane road better than something
soft...even with power lines running on both sides.
There are 18 NTSB accident reports involving emergency landings (engine out) in the universe of Lancair pilots. Five occurred during takeoff, three during landing and nine during cruise or descent. Three involved Loss of Control (stall/ spin) close to the ground and were fatal.

Four landed on roads. Two of those collided with trucks-- neither suffered any injuries. One landed on a raod and had no injuries. One (Shannon) attempted a landing on a road and hit a pole--fatal.

I believe the Lancair unpowered flight king is Don Goetz.

I will get back with more details on the statistics of emergency landings in Lancairs.
