I'm not sure what you said here, but I agree that Oil filters love to retain oil. I always stab a hole in the filter and let it drain for several hours while oil is draining. This usually eliminates any significant residual and accompanying spillage. I will say that cutting your nuts off doesn't sound too pleasing and might lead to more than a dry start.
