Shortly after 7:00 AM on Saturday morning at Livermore Airport in
California, Scott Alair took to the sky for the first time in his Lancair
Legacy N495SL.  The flight lasted 23 minutes as he circled the airport in
a race track pattern.  His stock IO-550N with a 3 bladed Hartzel propeller
performed well and Scott noted a true airspeed of 238 kts at 2500 and
24.5? on the nearly standard day without his ram air turned on.  During
climb out he noted the highest CHT was 390 degrees and in cruise it cooled
off to 365 degrees.

Scott said his Legacy flew beautifully and the only problem he had was
slowing it down when he got to the slow flight portion of his flight plan.
He had the power pulled back to 12? to get it slowed to his 150 kt target
speed.  The chase plane, a RV-4, did all it could to stay inside Scott?s
gradual turn while he circled the airport.

After going though all the items on his flight plan, Scott descended to
pattern altitude and made a near perfect landing.  Back at his hangar, a
crowd of about 25 people congratulated him on a great first flight.  All
the RV-4 chase pilot could say was that Scott?s Legacy was ?really fast?.
Why the RV pilot had to state the obvious is beyond me.  I guess he truly
was impressed at how great a plane the Legacy really is.

Congratulations Scott.  Job well done.  Now fly off that time so we can go
for a ride.
